With summer well and truly upon us, the RSPCA ACT is reminding locals to keep their pets happy and healthy.

Temperatures are set to reach the high 30’s this week, meaning the potential health risks for pets are greater.

Some things that can cause harm to pets include parked cars, walking in direct sunlight, ute trays, hot verandas and playing in the sun without water and shade.

Keeping pets well hydrated, out of the sun and regularly applying pet friendly sunscreen can help animals in the warmer months.

The shelter is also sending out a reminder ahead of Christmas, to keep your pets away from certain festive foods.

Chocolate, alcohol, ham, dairy products and mince pies are just some foods that can be poisonous to your furry friends.
