The man who stabbed two students at the Australian National University in 20-23 has been given a life sentence, to be carried out in a mental health facility.

26-year old Alex Ophel has been found not guilty of two counts of attempted murder by reason of mental impairment by the ACT Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum said Mr Ophel’s chronic schizophrenia made him a danger to the community.

On the day the attack occurred, Ophel was on day release from the Gawanggal mental health facility.

He hit a man on the head with a frying pan, before stabbing one woman who was reading a book, later stabbing another female student.

The case will now be managed by a tribunal.
