Motorcycle Awareness month underway, with focus on keeping Canberra’s roads safe

October is Motorcycle Awareness Month, which acts as a timely reminder that every road user has a role to play in keeping Canberra’s roads safe.

Motorcyclists account for just five per cent of registered vehicles in the ACT, yet they represented approximately 44 per cent of all road fatalities over the past two years and nearly one third of people admitted to hospital following crashes.

The ACT Government are encouraging all riders to adopt a defensive riding mindset and reminds all road users to stay alert, anticipate hazards and make safe decisions every time they travel.

This year, the ACT Government has partnered with the Motor Accident Injuries Commission to promote messages aimed at improving safety for motorcyclists and encouraging drivers to share the responsibility.

Motorcycle riders are encouraged to ride defensively, including to adjust their speed to suit road, weather and traffic conditions, taking corners safely, approaching intersections with caution and only overtaking when it is safe to do so.

Riders should also wear appropriate protective gear and ensure their motorcycle is roadworthy before every ride.

Drivers are reminded to look twice for motorcycles and check their blind spots before changing lanes, merging or entering traffic.
