More than half of the country’s universities have fallen in the latest global rankings.

The Centre for World University Rankings claims years of inadequate funding has contributed to the drop.

The Australian National University is 93rd out of 2000, but was named the third best university in Australia.

The University of Canberra came in at 1139th.

Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford took the top five spots.

The Center for World University Rankings grades universities on four factors without relying on surveys and university data submissions: education, employability, faculty, and research.
