A Canberra sailor has been rescued off the coast of Tasmania after his engine failed.

The 57-year-old was on his way from Victoria when the engine in his yacht failed late on Saturday.

Rescue aircraft from Victoria and Tasmania were dispatched at first light yesterday and the man’s been taken to hospital for medical assessment.

Police say it was a difficult rescue due to dangerous weather conditions, with the tender for the yacht breaking free.
