There’s a push for roadside assistance companies to ensure their contractors carry identification or registration details.

Laura Johnston is leading the push, after she called her roadside company for assistance late one night in February just outside the ACT.

Ms Johnston says she was confronted by a man who claimed he was there from NRMA, before he allegedly swore at her and left when she asked for identification.

The petition creator says the feedback from the community has been supportive.

“A lot of people have told me that they had no idea that roadside assistance companies could or did contract out in rural or remote areas,” Ms Johnston says.

“But I don’t think that’s enough. I think roadside assistance companies should change their policies to be safer and at least 22,000 people agree with me.”
