Canberrans flooding EDs with minor illness and injury

Category: Capital Radio News

Canberrans are the most likely to visit a hospital emergency department for non urgent issues, according to the latest data.
The report from  the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed 13% of patients who present to emergency departments in Canberra have non-urgent issues.
That's the highest of any state or territory.
Contrastingly, only 9% of presentation were classed as needing emergency treatment.
Figures also show the ACT recorded the highest percentage increase in presentation numbers with an almost 6% increase.
Health Minister Katy Gallagher says despite the increase in presentations there was an improvement in waiting times
Ms Gallaegher added it was also important to find out why ACT Hospitals are seeing such big increase despite improved access to GP's.
