New regulations may be needed to measure airtightness of homes

A new regulatory approach may need to be applied to the energy efficiency rating, following weeks of smoke haze blanketing Canberra.

The current model done at the design phase makes an assumption that the building is airtight, but there is no requirement to test this prior to an energy efficiency rating being provided.

Some Canberrans are being forced out of their homes, due to smoke leaking into their building, however, Light House Architecture and Science director Jenny Edwards told the Times there is no real relationship between airtightness and energy efficiency.

One of the other issues regulators might face is it is increasingly difficult to measure the airtightness of a home, and what pressure this might place on administrations going forward.
