Cannabis bill "inconsistent": Chief Police Officer

Category: Capital Radio News

Cannabis users in the ACT could face jail time if a bill to legalise the drug passes, the territory's chief police officer has warned.

Chief Police Officer Ray Johnson has warned the legalisation of the drug could leave Australian Federal Police officers open to allegations of failing to carry out their duties.

Backbencher Michael Pettersson's bill would remove cannabis possession as an offence for adults under the criminal code.

However the drug is still controlled under Commonwealth law, which overrides state law if inconsistent with federal law.
